The reason old dragonslayer’s armor was black is probably because he got scorched by nameless king’s lightning, or nameless king’s storm drake. Ornstein realized that lightning was ineffective and meddled in dark magic, (one of the nameless king’s weaknesses) which explains why old dragon slayer uses it in Ds2. He presumably wanted him to return and lead in Gwyn’s place but he had already gone mad, so they both fought.

Ornstein had already set off to find nameless king before the boss fight in dark souls 1. “But why did ornstein have a soul then?” The Dragonslater Armour boss proves to us that regular objects can be given a soul and can fight while being controlled by an outside force. Evidence? Smough’s armor mentions he was the last knight to stand in defence of the ruined cathedral. In dark souls 1 the ornstein was a illusion created by Gwyndolin. But of course that's only a theory, a game theory. It's possible Ornstein realized he was right after this happened and set out to make it right.

Maybe the linking of the fire was also what lead the Nameless King to turn away from the gods. After he saw the trickery that was employed to get the Chosen Undead to link the fire, maybe he had enough. But then the question becomes why does Ornstein leave afterwards? Well we can only speculate but it's possible he harbored doubts about the linking of the fire. In DS3 we do find out that Gwyndolin is still alive (for the moment). Gwyndolin likely protects himself in some capacity and we only gain a portion of his soul similar to Seeth gaining a piece of Gwyn' soul. Meaning we must not actually kill Gwyndolin despite gaining his soul. That is certainly possible, but remember that if you "kill" Gwyndolin without attacking Gwynevere, Anor Londo never goes dark and the illusion of Gwynevere remains. So you're probably thinking that the only way this is possible is if they were an illusion created by Gwyndolin. If O&S died, they wouldn't be around to test the next prospective Lords. The fire would eventually fade again and new Lords of Cinder would need to link the fire. If the chosen undead is the second person to link the fire after Gwyn, it wouldn't make sense if it were possible to kill O&S completely. How is that possible? In DS1, the O&S is supposed to be one of several tests to determine if a prospective undead is capable of linking the fire. My theory: we do fight the real Ornstein in DS1 and he leaves the cathedral afterwards. This lead many player to believe that the red plume was Ornstein's hair. In the games inital release, the red plume featured on Ornstein's helm was not present when the player wore it, just like the previous games.Video Location (fextralife video starting at 2h 45m 44s) or watch this video from the bonfire. It can be found futher down, to the left when running down from the Nameless King, after the Titanite Slab.
